Chakka Aviyal(Jackfruit Aviyal)

Posted by Annita on March 24, 2006

Jackfruit Jack fruit dishes like ‘Chakka Pradhaman’(Jack fruit Pudding),’Chakka Varatti’ (Jackfruit Jam)& ‘Chakka Varuthathu’(Jack fruit Chips) are very popular in Kerala.’Chakka‘ (Jackfruit) can be eaten whole or cooked .But its seeds are very nutritious ,it is a rich source of complex carbohydrate, dietary fiber, vitamins like A,B and C, and minerals like calcium, zinc, and phosphorous. Their health benefits are wide-ranging from anti-cancer to antihypertensive, anti-ageing, antioxidant, anti-ulcer, etc.More information from Jackfruit can be obtained here.’Chakka Aviyal‘(Jackfruit Aviyal) ,my mom -in -laws speciality, is a little tweaked from traditional Kerala Aviyal .I really appreciate her creativity in making ‘aviyal’ with almost anything.Deepu had been missing this ‘chakka aviyal‘ for last 2 years. So i decided to give it a try with the frozen jackfruit ,the only choice for us.Those frozen jackfruits lacked almost everything ,the color, taste, texture..but after cooking ,it somehow regained its properties, and it tasted almost the same.
And here’s the recipe..
Ingredients:-
Young green jackfruit-1 cup
(Do not use the sweet/ripen ones..it will get all messed up)
Turmeric powder -a pinch
Red chilli powder – 1/2 tsp
Grated Coconut – 1/2 cup
Jeera – 1/2 tsp
Garlic – 1 clove
Tamarind paste – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – a few
Salt – to taste
Oil – 1 tsp

Jackfruit pieces
Frozen Jackfruit cut into stripes
Method:-
Cut each jackfruit bulbs into thin stripes and cook it adding little water, turmeric and salt.Grind together coconut, chilly powder, jeera, garlic and half of curry leaves using less water. When the jackfruit pieces are cooked well, stir the ground ingredients and tamarind paste into it.Simmer for 5 minutes stirring occasionally.Garnish with coconut oil and add the rest half of curry leaves into it.Close the lid and let the aroma spread into the curry.

wow, I love green jackfruit (obvious, isn't it). But the frozen and
canned ones always lack in taste. So I eat it only in India. My
grandmom makes a kerala style curry with it. The recipe is almost the
same except we use green chilies and no garlic. Since your verdict is
this dish turns out well with frozen jackfruit, I will have to try it
    real soon.

Actually I thought about u just before posting it..and i really expected a comment from u..:))

You can try it Mika,After cooking it gave almost the same taste.

Annita, sounds delicious again…just like your other recipes…

I've never heard of chakka aviyal…I've heard only chakka erisseri….

BTW, is this young green jackfruit the unripened jackfruit or…. I mean is this the Idichakka/kada chakka? I've bought a can from international market which has name on it as young green jackfruit but that's actually the bread fruit(kada chakka or idichakka whatever that is called as)Could you clarify on that…so that I can try this recipe this week? Thanks Annita.

Chakka Aviyal is popular in Trivandrum area i guess. Its my mom -in -laws recipe.

Yes..ur right ..it is unripened jackfruit only.. not kadachakka..I bought it from an Indian grocery store..it was a frozen packet..not the can..I donno whether it is available in can.Hope this helps Rg..
