Palak Paneer

Posted by Annita on September 12, 2006

A rich and healthy deliccacy, which goes well with any type of roti.Palak puree combined with spices and heavy cream to give a fabulous taste.I don’t understand why some people(including my husband) don’t find this dish impressive as I do.

Palak Paneer
Palak Paneer

This is a very popular dish in India, and most of the people might have their own recipe, and here goes my version ..

Ingredients:-

Spinach/Palak cleaned – 1 bunch
Green Chillies – 3-4
Chopped Onion – 2
Cumin seeds – 1/2 tsp
Cashews – 8 (Optional)
Heavy Cream – 1 tbsp (Optional)
Paneer – 15 – 20 cubes
Ghee – 2 tbsp

For Grinding:-
Sliced Onion – 1/2
Ginger garlic paste – 1 tsp
Tomato – 1/2 medium sized
Chopped coriander leaves – 2 tsp

Coriander powder – 1/2 tsp
Red chilly powder – 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder – 1/4 tsp
Garam masala powder -1/2 tsp

Salt – to taste
Oil -as needed

Method:-

Cook spinach and green chillies in little water for 3-4 mts.Drain the water and then make a puree of it.Keep it aside.Dry roast cashews, make a powder of it and reserve.Grind together sliced onion,ginger- garlic paste, tomato and coriander leaves to a smooth paste and save them also for later use.
Heat little oil in a pan, add cumin seeds and allow it to splutter. Now add chopped onion and saute them till transparent. Now add the ground mixture and salt ,and saute them until the raw smell of onion disappears.Mix in red chilly powder, turmeric powder and coriander powder and saute them again for few minutes. Now stir in pureed spinach and cashew powderinto it.Add little water if needed and simmer for 5 minutes.
Heat ghee in another pan and shallow fry paneer cubes till they are lightly browned.Add this fried paneer cubes together with the left over ghee to the prepared palak. You can also add paneer cubes as such, without frying it in ghee.Mix it well and transfer to a serving bowl.Garnish with heavy cream and serve hot.

Palak Paneer served with chappathi

Same way you can prepare Aloo Palak or Gobi Palak, deep frying aloo or gobi instead of shallow frying paneer cubes.

I too am not a fan of palak paneer…I had it once in a party and absolutely hated it ever since. :( I used to wonder what’s so great abt it, why do people love it so much????… but you on the other hand :)) is wondering why would anyone hate this dish, right? :))

Yes,rg..As u said,I still wonder how can u neglect such a heavenly dish.u know something ,my husband loves the saag paneer which we get in Indian restaurants here in U.S.The texture of that is somewhat different from what we get in India. They dont make a puree of  Palak, and they add more cream and so it’ll be almost a whitish green color.

    hi there
I was looking for thankam philips home page and accidentally came across this one. For quite some time I have been looking for a simple and authentic palak paneer recipe. Years back a lady from lucknow who was my neighbour for a brief period came to my place to grind the spices for this dish as her mixie had a problem. she ground whole spices ginger and garlic with green chillies. This was fried in ghee and all other masalas were added in moderation(so she told me)and blanched spinach was added to this.
    Thanks

  14. I AM AN AMERICAN INTERESTED IN INDIAN FOODS. WHAT COMPLIMENTS PALAK PANNER? iS IT SERVED AS A MAIN DISH? I AM GOING TO TRY ADDING TOFU TO IT?

    SUGGESTIONS/COMMENTS ARE WELCOME?

    ROBIN EMERY

Palak Paneer is usually served as a side dish..It can be served along with rice or Indian breads..You can try adding tofu to this dish..But in my personal opinion I love Paneer more than Tofu..

  23. Woah! I’m really digging the template/theme of this site. It’s simple, yet effective.

A lot of times it’s challenging to get that “perfect balance” between superb usability and visual appeal. I must say that you’ve done a excellent job with
this. Additionally, the blog loads very fast for me on Opera.

    Exceptional Blog!
